This email is full of really cool stuff

Hey mailing list pals!

Scroll down a bit if you want to hear more about the Purity Culture Dropout Queer Support Groups and how to join for January 2026 (these only come around once/year like Santa or Krampus!)

But first I have some other cool stuff to tell you about!

This past weekend, I was at a professional retreat for sex educators.

I presented a talk entitled Christian Nationalism, Purity Culture, and the Erosion of Sex Ed in America.

Because of my work with purity culture survivors, I know a lot about the inner workings of Christian Nationalism that others in my field aren't always privy to. It kind of has me feeling like this:

Did you know that purity culture didn't spring up in the 1990s, but rather has a long history in the US that's rooted in racism and the social purity movements of the 1800s? Did you ever wonder why in the 1990s, teens pledging abstinence was presented as a matter of national thriving? If this interests you, I have a book recommendation:

After Purity: Race, Sex, and Religion in White Christian America by Sara Moslener

I relied on this book as a source for my talk and I recommend it to anyone who wants to know more about the roots of American purity culture, as well as Sara's podcast Pure White: A history podcast series that traces the relationships among sexual purity, White supremacy, and Christian nationalism from the 19th century to the present.

Have you ever wondered "So I deconstructed the faith I was raised with, but now how can I make the world better?"

An incredible woman I know asked herself this question and decided she wants to organize Ex-vangelicals like herself to take action: Enter Project 21:12.

Project 21:12 aims to provide clear on-ramps for community-building and solidarity organizing to former evangelicals (“Exvangelicals” or “post-evangelicals”) in order to help folks make meaning of their experiences, be emboldened in community with others, and take action to diminish the power of rising Christian Nationalism fueled in part by evangelical leaders, while building the power of a social justice solidarity movement.

If that sounds like something you're into, you can sign up to learn more as it unfolds. You can also share your "leaving story" here.

Let's talk about my book for a second! It comes out February 19, 2026 officially, but that means you can preorder it now. Some really incredible people I admire have given advanced praise for The Purity Culture Recovery Guide, and I'm honestly beside myself about it.

“When you know how your body works you can make informed decisions about it,” which is exactly why purity culture exists in the first place. The Purity Culture Recovery Guide will heal people raised with shame, silence and fear around sex. Erica Smith brilliantly and respectfully speaks right into the wounded curiosity experienced by purity culture survivors, answering questions we held in secret. What’s normal? What’s real? Why do I feel this way? In high-control religion, even forming the questions themselves can be scary. The Purity Culture Recovery Guide is the book I wish I had growing up and I wish I’d had it to hand my maturing children, which makes me hope this books reaches a new generation preventively—so that in a few years, there’s less need to recover.
— Tia Levings, author of the NYT Bestselling memoir, A Well-Trained Wife: My Escape from Christian Patriarchy and I Belong to Me: A Survivor’s Guide to Recovery and Hope after Religious Trauma

The indomitable, badass Tia Levings said that 😭😭😭

It doesn’t matter what letter of the LGBTQ+ umbrella you are, or whether you’re out or not. Also "growing up Catholic" is purity culture enough, too.

  • Tuesdays at 7pm ET (starts 1/6/26)
  • Thursdays at 9pm ET (starts 1/8/26)

Here's what some other folks had to say about their time in the PCD Queer Support Groups:

"I will give Erica a 10 page 5 star review of this course. DO IT."

"As someone coming out in my 30s AND raised as a conservative Christian, I was worried I wouldn't be able to find a community who really got it. Thanks to PCD, I now have a circle of people who I can trust to listen and support me about issues few other people would understand. Erica created a nonjudgmental space where we could talk about complicated feelings and share the kind of outrageous experiences that can only come from being raised in purity culture. I feel like my cohort are the siblings I never had, and joining the program is one of the best things I've ever done for myself (short of coming out)! Also, several times I laughed until I almost threw up, and it was awesome."

"I was going through a rough emotional time when I joined the group, and have come out of it feeling way more grounded in my decisions, my identity, and the people I surround myself with. I couldn’t have asked for a better group of people to spend those weeks working through stuff with (and then some, since we've all kept in touch!), and I will 100% be referring some of my friends to the program."

"Possibly nothing had a bigger impact on my personal growth in 2020 than Erica's Queer Support Group (and 2020 was a lot). It certainly had the biggest impact on my happiness, sense of belonging, and continued journey of self-discovery. Despite not having an evangelical background, I still grew up affected by purity culture and had zero exposure to queer-friendly sex education.

Not only did I learn a lot in a safe, welcoming, and educational environment expertly facilitated by Erica, but I formed deep, lifelong friendships with 8 incredibly fierce, intelligent, courageous, beautiful badass queers who I can't fucking wait to group hug someday soon."

Finally: If you're worried that you're not "queer enough for group," or are "taking up space" that doesn't belong to you- know that we will explore exactly this. These groups are for you, babe.

I can't wait to meet all of the new group members (it's my favorite part of my work) and I hope to see you among them.

Let me know what questions you have by replying to this email.

Psst: my individual education/ coaching sessions for the month of December are 30% off for everyone. When I was in fourth grade in 1988, we had an AIDS education class. I don't remember that much about it, but I do remember one girl wasn't allowed to be present for the lesson because her mother didn't want her to. I wish I could remember what fourth graders in Bellwood, PA learned about AIDS in 1988. I'm grateful we learned anything at all. I knew AIDS was a sad, scary disease when I was a...
