Purity Culture and Masculinity: A Group for Men NOW ENROLLING!

Purity Culture and Masculinity is a new Purity Culture Dropout™ group for men who want to examine masculinity and patriarchy, especially in light of the rise of Christian Nationalism.

This group is for men who want:

  • A safe place where you can discuss your experiences with gender roles and expectations, masculinity, patriarchy, sexuality, and what it means to be a man in today’s world
  • To build community with like-minded men (I know so many of you leave religious communities and miss that aspect)
  • Supportive and enlightening discussions led and facilitated by a skilled sexuality educator with a background in gender studies (me!)
  • Curated educational materials (readings, videos, etc) to supplement the group discussion topics
  • A supportive environment where the discussion of serious topics meets humor and warmth (I promise we’ll have fun)

Men, Let's Talk

It feels like every day we wake up to more news related to men and masculinity that's hard to process. This week it's the bombshell report from CNN that 62 million men have visited a website where they learn from each other how to drug and sexually abuse women. Prominent Evangelical men are preaching marital rape from the pulpit, Dr. Oz says that Trump has the "highest" testosterone level of a man his age, and the head of the US military fakes heavy bench presses for internet glory. Manosphere influencers are radicalizing youth, and young men are "looksmaxxing" which includes hitting their facial bones with hammers in order to be more attractive!? There's so much to unpack just in these few headlines, and I haven't even scratched the surface.

I know a lot of good men. I was raised by one. I also really enjoy talking to my male clients and support group members, especially when it feels like they don't have many places to process their thoughts and feelings about all of the patriarchal conditioning they're working through.

Some of the topics we’ll explore over the course of eight weeks include:

  • Masculinity and what being a man means to you
  • Patriarchy
  • Gender roles and expectations
  • Intimate relationships
  • Fatherhood and family styles
  • Bodies and body image
  • Sex, porn, and masturbation
  • Violence
  • Shame and guilt
  • Your personal experiences and stories as related to the above topics

Groups begin in early May.

Click here to find out more details about the structure, pricing, dates, and times.

This group is open to all men regardless of age. Trans men are welcome. My hope is to create a great mix of guys who can learn from and support each other.

Forward this to any men you might know who are interested. You can reply to this email with any questions you may have also!

I developed the Purity Culture Dropout™️ Program to help people learn all of the sex education that they missed growing up in purity culture- sex ed that is accurate, queer inclusive, trauma informed, compassionate, and comprehensive. I have worked with hundreds of people to help them learn about healthy sexuality after high control religion. Subscribe if you're curious about / invested in shame free sexuality education that's specifically tailored to the needs of people coming out of high control religions and purity culture. Expect information not just about healthy sexuality and upcoming programming, but also cultural commentary on sexual politics in the US. I'm a sex educator with 25 years of experience and I'm excited to share that with you.

The Queen of Appalachia, The Book Lady, and Fairy Godmother To All passed away yesterday at the age of 80. It simply didn't occur to many of us that Dolly Parton could even die. Incredible and heartfelt tributes have been pouring in from all over the globe, from people of all generations, races, and nationalities. She was really that beloved. My friend texted me the news, and I admit I spent the rest of the day consumed by it- reading about her and scrolling through all of the tributes. What...

Hey newsletter friends! Don't forget this Sunday May 31 I'm hosting a virtual class called Yin Yoga for Purity Culture Survivors! You can read more about it if you scroll down a bit. ⬇️ If you're in the US, how was your Memorial Day weekend? Here in Philly it was rainy, cold, and generally gross- definitely not "down the shore" weather. If you had a day off, I hope you made the most of it! I wasn't technically off work all weekend (obviously my own choice lol). On Sunday I ran one of the...

A story: Last year in one of my Purity Culture Dropout™ Divorce Support Groups, I met an incredible woman named Shauna. She shared with us how she's healing her own religious trauma and relationship with her body through yin yoga- first as a student, and then as an instructor. I invited Shauna to lead our group through one of her classes, and it was just incredible. Shauna tailored her class to the experience of a religious trauma survivor, and it felt like a warm hug. I was struck by her...
